Square Clutch – Tutorial

Last week I offered to make a clutch for my oldest daughter to match a dress I had made for her earlier this summer. She said she would like to have a square clutch because the neckline on her dress is square. No problem. Only I couldn’t find a pattern for any online that I truly liked.  I decided to make my own. So here is my square clutch tutorial.

I took pictures as I was working so that I could share this pattern with you in case you too need a square clutch.

Materials needed:Healthy Simplicity - Square Clutch Tutorial

Main Fabric

  • 12 ½” x 10 ” (main body) cut one
  • 10″ x 6 ½” (flap) cut two
  • 6″ x 25″ (knot – optional) cut two

Lining

  • 12 ½” x 10″  – cut one

Stiff Interfacing

  • 12 ½” x 10″  – cut one

Medium Interfacing

  • 10″ x 6 ½” – cut one

1) Attach stiff interfacing to main fabric.

2) Fold in half and sew side seams. Clip bottom corners.

3) Fold lining in half. Sew the side seams but leave a 3″ opening on one side. You can see my opening on the bottom right side.

4) Attach the medium interfacing to one of the flap pieces.

5) Sew knot pieces together – right sides facing. I used to colours because I wanted a slight contrast.

6) Turn the “knot” right side out. Press. Top stitch down each long side.

7) Make a knot. This might take a few tries to get one the exact way you like it. Centre it on the flap about 1″ from the bottom. Baste in place on the sides and trim the excess fabric.

9) Sew the flap to the back of the clutch with right sides together using a ¼” seam.

10) With the clutch right side out and the lining wrong side out put the clutch inside the lining tucking the flap down inside. Pin around the top edges and sew.

11) Turn the clutch inside out through hole in lining. Slipstitch hole closed. Press. Topstitch around top edge if desired.

Do you enjoy carrying a clutch? After years of diaper bags I’m getting back to purses. I’m not sure if I’m downsized enough for a clutch, but my daughters enjoy them.

A clutch, probably not although this one is super pretty. I still need my giant Mommy purse where I can stow that extra waterbottle, the stray toy someone hands me that they just don’t want to carry, Edwards sun glasses and on and on.
