Friday File 37

The first week of school is over, and it went so well. It’s a little frustrating at times that my Grade Two son can’t read yet, but we have seen improvements already with the exercises we are following to cure his dyslexia. For the first time ever he did a page of math facts and not a single “5” was backwards. His copywork has improved from one long string of letters to showing the actual gaps between words. His letter recognition has vastly improved so I’m hopeful that within the next month we’ll be able to progress to actual reading lessons.

This week our queen became the longest reigning British monarch. I recently started following “The British Monarchy” page on Facebook. I never realized just how hard working the queen is. This post is a great one describing her and her life.

Long May She Reign!

My daughter sent this post to me. The author shows the character development of Laura through all of her books. I’ve never read anything quite like this and found it so interesting. It also made me think, “How often do I complain about my work?” What a horrible example for my children. Once again Caroline Ingalls shines as an example I would like to follow as a mother.

I need a new overnight bag, and I found a nice pattern. I think I’ll make this – I love sewing bags and purses. I don’t know why I find it so satisfying. I just do.

Now that we’re living in an old house (it was built in 1861) I think I made need a set of these for everyone’s beds. We lived in a century farmhouse for three years a while ago. Winter nights can be cold.

Rebelling doesn’t have to be a “rite of passage” for teenagers. Here’s one girl’s take on how to avoid it.

I hope you’ve had a lovely start to your fall and that school is going well!

He’ll come along with his reading.

I love homeschooling – every child has their own way and time to learn. I don’t think one is ahead of the other. Tim struggles with penmanship and in doing some reading online, I told Pierre I saw it can be a sign of ADHD – lol. I think for him he doesn’t need to be told that but just some extra work so I found some ideas on how to slow him down and get him to focus and we are going to work on letter formation together next week ;).

We have been reading the Little House series and I’m soooo impressed with Laura’s character – she is 16 in the book we are reading and she teaches all week and sews all day on Saturday and THEN turns over the money to her parents joyfully! So amazing. Girls today are bumps on the log compared to her LOL.

I have to wonder if the Queen has reigned so long BECAUSE of her strong work ethic.

I didn’t read the article but I agree – there IS not rite of passage for teens to rebel. We must gain their hearts biblically and then the desire will be to follow God. It is a lot of work but the rewards are worth it 🙂

I think sometimes it is the girls, too LOL 🙂 Genevieve’s SS teacher asked her once if she “piddles” and she asked what that means and then said, “Yeah, I guess I do – my mom says that too” hahaha
