Thinking through the things I made this winter I feel like I did almost as much knitting as I did sewing so I’ll probably include some pictures of knitted pieces.
I’ve had a lot of fun over the past couple of months learning all the new features on my new computerized sewing machine. I did NOT want a computerized machine and even told the saleslady that. However, when she showed me how the machine does button holes I was sold! Button holes have never been a strong point for me (in spite of my love affair with buttons), and they are sooo easy on this machine. Bring on the buttons!
Without further ado here is how I did…
re-usable cloth paper towels– still on my list – someday I’ll get this one done – and now it’s STILL on my list- pajama bottoms for all of my boys and also pajama sets for my three youngest – I’ve already started this. This one I did accomplish. It included three full sets of pjs (tops and bottoms) for my three youngest boys with an extra set of bottoms for each boy, and two pajama pants for my oldest son and one for my second son. Working with fleece is easy and fun. These pjs all went together fast. I don’t even use a pattern for my big boys. I just lay their old pjs on the fabric and make adjustments according to how they say the old pair fits or doesn’t fit.
curtains for my bedroomand one for my little boys’ room – I’m about 90% finished the curtain for my little guys. It’s up, but I need to take it down and do some adjustments so they fit better.- I really want to make an
overnight bag for myself. You know how it is when you have something to make for yourself – you usually put it off in favour of sewing for someone else. a pin cushion/sewing mat– I had a pattern all set for this. Then I saw something I like better. It has an attached bag for throwing all of your cut threads and fabric scraps in. I just need to figure out how I would keep it weighted. That statement will make sense when I make this and show you all.- I know I’ll be sewing gifts too this fall. Oh, yes! I made tons of gifts. Some not pictures are messenger bags for several little guys and a dressy skirt for my youngest daughter.

- I’m starting to more formally teach my two youngest daughters how to sew. One thing we’re going to work on is a quilt top using leftover fleece from all of my projects over the years to make the quilt squares with. Fleece is a very forgiving fabric so it’s a good material to use for beginners. We did this and I wrote a couple of posts about this which you can read here and here.
And for the knitting…

Altogether I knit eight pairs of socks this winter. These are the biggest and smallest pair.
I also knit three scarves. Two on circular needles for my two oldest boys and a gorgeous cable knit (I love cable patterns) for my husband.

I enjoy doing these update posts. In the day to day living I sometimes feel like I’m not getting much accomplished especially when my to-do list never seems to get any smaller. Laying it all out here shows I really did get quite a bit done.
What did you do this past winter? I enjoy reading about other people’s projects.

I didn’t finish everything I planned, but here’s my winter bucket list.

In response to your comment on my spring bucket list:
I LOVE the idea of a summer sewing list! That’s a great thing to do when it’s hot outside!
Thanks for “talking back” at Harvest Lane Cottage. Do you know that your comments come through to my email as a “no reply blogger”? If you’d like to get direct responses to your comments more often, you might like to know how to change that. I wrote about it in this blog post.

If you’re like me, you don’t have time to go back and check on other blogs to see if you’ve gotten a response to your comment. I sometimes can take time to track down commenters, but I’m usually short on time.

I need to get back to making a seasonal to-do list. I did so spectacularly on a couple last year, then never posted one for the winter. Feels a little late for a spring one, but maybe I’ll toss off a short one anyway. Or just get a head start on the summer!
Your husband’s scarf is gorgeous. Wow. I love that soft grey color. Congrats on getting a goodly number of projects accomplished!

Sometimes I feel so scattered so I REALLY need lists to keep me on track.
I had so much fun making my husband’s scarf. I love cables – knitting them and how they look.

There are days where, at breakfast, I’ll make myself go get a piece of paper and pen and just list out the stuff I’ve got to do because otherwise I spend WAY too much mental and emotional energy trying to remember it all. Also, one of my Sunday school kids gave me a little homemade dry-erase board for Christmas, and ever since I’ve been writing out the next day’s activities on it as the kids get ready for bed. Sam finds this really helpful to him so he knows what he can expect on any given day. Usually it just has stuff like Do School, Fold Laundry, Clean Downstairs Bathroom, but I also try to put any special activities like Pancakes for Breakfast or Sam Helps Make Supper on there too. Keeps me on track, helps them know what’s ahead, and Sarah has learned to read the days of the week from it too!

Yes, saving mental energy is a big reason why I make lists. I’ve got enough going on in my head without adding a list to it. 🙂
I love your idea for the children. My big ones pretty much know what they need to do for the day, but I have been thinking about getting an erasable board that I can write the day’s menu on. I’m a little tired of explaining it multiple times. 🙂
