This song has been in my head and heart for the last couple of days. It’s not a well-known hymn. I discovered it while playing the piano one day – just playing whatever hymns caught my fancy.
I love the comfort of this song reminding me that I have a Friend Who loved me before I even knew Him. Not only did He love me before I knew Him, but He also cares for me today – leading, guiding, comforting.
The song also reminds me over and over that I can never be separated from this Friend. This is such a precious truth. So many of my friends live far from me. Thankfully through the wonders of modern technology we can easily stay in touch (and that’s wonderful), but I don’t have to rely on modern technology to communicate with my heavenly Friend. He is always with me.
I hope this song will bless you today as much as it has me.
I’ve found a Friend, oh, such a friend!
He loved me ere I knew Him;
He drew me with the cords of love,
And thus He bound me to Him.
And round my heart still closely twine
Those ties which naught can sever,
For I am His, and He is mine,
Forever and forever.
I’ve found a Friend, oh, such a friend!
He bled, He died to save me;
And not alone the gift of life,
But His own Self He gave me!
Naught that I have mine own I call,
I’ll hold it for the Giver,
My heart, my strength, my life, my all
Are His, and His forever.
I’ve found a Friend, oh, such a friend!
All pow’r to Him is given,
To guard me on my onward course,
And bring me safe to heaven.
Th’ eternal glories gleam afar,
To nerve my faint endeavor;
So now to watch, to work, to war,
And then to rest forever.
I’ve found a Friend, oh, such a friend!
So kind and true and tender,
So wise a Counselor and Guide,
So mighty a Defender!
From Him who loves me now so well
What pow’r my soul can sever?
Shall life or death, shall earth or hell?
No! I am His forever.
