I may have mentioned a time or three how much I love my Kindle. I think it is one of my favourite gifts that my husband bought for me.

I made a cover for that Kindle following a pattern that I found online, but for the last couple of years my brain has been perking with ideas for making a different kind. I finally had an excuse to try one when my daughter was given a Kindle and needed a cover for it.

I took pictures so I could share this simple pattern with you so you could make one for your Kindle. The measurements our for a Paperwhite so if you have a different kind of Kindle you’ll have to adjust the pattern accordingly.

Here’s what you’ll need:

• a small amount of fabric – one or two colours
• interfacing – optional
• stiff material – poster board, thin plastic, etc.
• 12″ of ¼” elastic
• thin elastic for button closure – I used a hair elastic
• large button with shank ( you know I can’t make something without buttons!)
• miscellaneous – scissors, exacto knife, thread, embellishments

You need to cut your fabric into three pieces:

Fabric

• 1 – 6″ x 8″
• 1 – 11½” x 8″
• 1 – 6½” x 8″

Interfacing

• 1 – 11½” x 8″

Stiff Material

• 2 – 4¾” x 7″
• 1 – 7″ x 3/8″

For my stiff material I had an old three-ring soft plastic binder that no longer worked. I had saved it thinking I could use it someday in a craft project. Using an exacto knife I was able to cut it to the size needed.

Using the 6″ x 8″ piece of fabric and on the right side of the fabric place the four pieces of elastic on the four corners and sew them down along the edges.

If you want to embellish the front now is the time. I layered fabrics, lace and ribbon. Just make sure that whatever you do is on the left side unless you want to decorate the back as well. Sew the thin elastic (or hair elastic) in the middle of the left side.

Now right sides together sew the two smaller pieces together. Press the seam flat. Then again right sides together sew the two pieces you now have together. Start on one long side, down the short side and across the other long side leaving one short side totally open.
Clip the corners. Turn the cover right side out and press it flat. Take one of your big stiff pieces and push it all the way to the end of your Kindle cover. Then carefully sew a seam beside this piece to hold it in place.  Do the same thing with the 3/8″ wide piece of stiff material pushing it tightly against the seam you just sewed and sewing another seam beside it. Then push the final piece of stiff material in. You can sew the opening closed now by machine or hand. I find it to be a much cleaner finish to sew it by hand.

Pretty, practical and simple. What more could you ask for? The happy recipient…
