Moving and Graduating

We’ve recently come through two momentous days as a family – one moving and the other our first graduating high school student. I thought I’d give you some highlights from those two days.

I think I can say without exaggeration that this has been my most difficult move. My older children helped tremendously. I can’t even imagine how much more difficult this would have all been without their help. I spoke of their help in this post.

However, my husband was not able to help much at all because of a full work schedule, and that made things difficult. I packed some of my husband’s things, but there was so much I couldn’t. So we came to moving day with many of his things still unpacked. It was a frantic last minute effort to get it all packed, and I don’t do well with time pressures like that.

This is the second time we’ve hired movers and had troubles with them. I won’t go into details, but I would truly never want to use movers again.

What just one part of my dining room looked like. Multiply that by every room.

You can see me off to the right – the first night. I just want it to all magically work itself out.

And of course, there is the settling in. I hate making decisions, and when you move it feels like endless decisions of where to put everything. Thankfully we’re mostly past that part now. This feels and looks like home. About 90% of our books are unpacked – and that’s saying a lot since we have hundreds. Most of our pictures are hung, and we’ve done lots of baking which always makes me feel at home. ☺

One thing I did do right was to keep all of our bedding in one spot including all of the hardware for putting the beds together. Our oldest son had one set of bunk beds and our bed together for that first night. The next day he did the rest of the beds. There is nothing like sleeping in your own bed with your own bedding for a good night’s sleep – and sleep is so important for being able to face the mountain of boxes waiting to be unpacked.

Less than two weeks after we moved in we had our oldest daughter’s graduation party here. That was a lot of pressure, but good pressure, to get things looking nice. Our living room was still a pile of boxes, but the family room and dining room were ready to go, and we had a great time.

Thankfully Eva-Joy had asked for a menu that was all finger foods – pizza, chips, veggies and dip, and cupcakes. The hardest things I had to do was prepare the vegetables. Elisabeth made and decorated the cupcakes, and Eva-Joy made the dip.

I kept the decorations very simple because that’s the way I operate, but Eva-Joy was happy. I used lots of purple (her favourite colour) in what I did do.

I can hardly believe that we’ve had our first high school graduation. Where did the time go?

So now that these two events are over, I’m hoping to get back to my blogging on a more regular basis. There are still a couple of rooms in the house that need some work, but overall we are all moved in and feeling at home.

I missed out on the news that you were moving – so happy to hear you are getting settled. Blessings to your family as you venture forth on the journey ahead and whatever the Lord brings across your path!

Well I can honestly say – “been there, done that” hahaha – 14 moves out of 21 years of marriage. We certainly have it down pat lol. It IS hard and I agree with you on the bed thing!
So nice when you can finally settle in.
