This week I read two Oppenheim books. I don’t usually read two in a row. I’m trying to dole them out to myself, but I was disappointed with the ending for The Illustrious Prince so I read another one – Jacob’s Ladder. This one did not disappoint. It was almost pure romance with a little bit of adventure thrown in. The romance is sweet and good. The characters were real – not sentimental or contrived. I just thoroughly enjoyed this book. The best part is that you can get it for free on Kindle.

16-year-old daughter – Laura by Vera Caspary. This is the book that the movie by the same name is based on. She said reading the book was like reading an extended version of the movie – very enjoyable. I’m reading the book now and so far I agree with what she said.

15-year-old son – Hidden Places by Lynn Austen.

13-year-old son – Journey Through the Night, Volume 1 by Anne De Vries. This is a four-volume series that follows the life of a Dutch family during World War II. I received this set as a gift in Junior High. I loved it, and now my children love it.

11-year-old daughter – Fire by Night by Lynn Austen.

9-year-old daughter – The Miraculous Journey of Edward Toulane by Kate DiCamillo. This is a story about a toy rabbit made of china with fancy clothes. He’s loved by a little girl whom he does not love in return because he’s too arrogant. On an ocean voyage he falls into the ocean. From there he was rescued by a fisherman. The fisherman’s wife fixes up his clothes, but then her grown-up daughter throws him away. And from there the adventures continue. Through it all Edward begins to change and realize that there are things in life worth giving your heart to. I read this book out loud to her, and we both really enjoyed it.

Now I have to come to a sad confession: I’ve not been reading to my little ones. Between packing up 98% of our books, not wanting to get new ones from the library at this late date, finishing up school, and all the business that comes with getting ready to move I just haven’t been reading to them. On the plus side the weather has been great – not too hot and not too cool – so they’ve been spending a lot of time enjoying our backyard.

They still have a few favourite books out that they’ve looked at and “read” to themselves. Soon we’ll be unpacking all of their books. Since they haven’t seen them for about a month they’ll all feel new, and it will be very exciting.
