I read an interesting book this week set in the early 1800’s American South on a slave plantation. In The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom an orphan Irish girl is taken on as an indentured servant. She belongs neither to the world of the slaves or to the world of the white masters. Somehow she grows up to join the world of the white masters with a bittersweet ending to the book.
16-year-old daughter – Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand. Don’t even ask how many times she’s read this now! I’m just glad she picked such a great American hero as one of her heroes.
14-year-old son – Pirates of Pompeii (The Roman Mysteries) by Caroline Lawrence
13-year-old son – Assassins of Rome (The Roman Mysteries) by Caroline Lawrence
11-year-old daughter – The Secrets of Vesuvius (The Roman Mysteries) by Caroline Lawrence
9-year-old daughter – Gregor and the Curse of the Warmbloods by Suzanne Collins
7-year-old son – The Lorax by Dr. Seuss
4-year-old son – Chicken Big by Keith Graves
2-year-old son – Where’s My Mom? by Julia Donaldson. This book was read courtesy of his aunt. My little boys get so excited when Aunt “Goolie” is going to read a book to them on Skype. If you are not taking advantage of Skype or something similar to connect with long-distance family, please start right away.

Intentional Simplicity 
Well you obviously know and have heard š some of the books on MY reading list LOL. I love reading to my nephews – and the nieces that sneak into the room to listen, too.
I have been reading “Devil at my Heels” – I must say I’m enjoying this one MORE than “Unbroken” (yes EJ I am) but mostly because it is told BY Louis and I love the way he writes :).
