I grew up in a home where music was important. My sisters and I all play the piano today. I also enjoy the organ when I’m around one and the clarinet. One of my sisters also plays the clarinet and has recently taken up the saxaphone (something I have a secret – now not so secret wish to do as well). My sisters and my dad all sing well too.
I have always found playing the piano a wonderful way to make me feel better when I am discouraged or depressed. It’s a little hard when you have little ones – they always want to do “duets” when I start playing. Maybe that’s why I enjoy playing the piano before church so much – no interruptions.
Last week I was playing the piano. One of the songs I played was “Hiding in Thee”. I love this song. How often when life felt like I just couldn’t go on have a gone to Jesus and cried out to Him all of my sorrows and discouragements. What a comfort to have a Saviour who knows and cares about our needs!
I was not able to find a good video of this song being sung, but you can listen to the music here as well as read the history behind this song. Not surprisingly this song was born out of great sorrow.
O safe to the Rock that is higher than I,
My soul in its conflicts and sorrows would fly;
Alone I would perish, undone would I be;
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.
Refrain:
Hiding in Thee, hiding in Thee,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.
In the calm of the noontide, in sorrow’s lone hour,
In times when temptation casts o’er me its pow’r;
In the tempests of life, on its wide, heaving sea,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.
How oft in the conflict, when pressed by the foe,
I have fled to my Refuge and breathed out my woe;
How often, when trials like sea billows roll,
Have I hidden in Thee, O Thou Rock of my soul.
What song encourages you when you are feeling down?
I found a duet of this song that is pretty good.

Beautiful song and story!
I love this song, too.
If you come for a visit then I’ll teach you the sax 🙂 – not that I know much yet lol but I’m getting there. Or I’ll bring it with me next time we come to Canada :).
Singing is SUCH a balm to the soul!!! Glad it was an important part of our growing up!

Yes, bring your sax. I’ve always had a secret longing to play the sax.
