It Is Well With My Soul

Hymn - Our Great SaviourI was playing through the hymn book today for a few minutes and “It Is Well With My Soul” came up. Years ago I read a book written by one of the daughters of Spafford. This daughter and her sister were born to him and his wife later in life.

Most people know the story of Spafford and his wife losing their four daughters in a ship accident. What most people don’t know is that a couple of years earlier they had lost their only son to sickness and then lost all of their savings in the Great Chicago Fire.

The song that has blessed and comforted so many was forged in the crucible of sorrow. I think that’s why it resonates with so many people. My favourite verse is the one that starts “My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought…” It speaks so triumphantly of Christ taking away our sins on the cross.

I knew there were more verses than those typically found in most hymnbooks and was able to find the lyrics today for all of the verses…

    Beautiful song – it never gets too old or dry to sing either.
    Nice to be able to see several “new” verses to it. I love that our church sings all verses to the songs because you miss, sometimes, the story in the song if you don’t!

      I agree about singing all the verses. I always think the author had a reason for writing them so why are we in such a rush to get the song over with that we skip some?

    Love love love this song, I think it is my favorite, to play AND to sing. My favorite verse is the same as yours – I bear my sin no more, never again! Praise the Lord!
