This is another favourite hymn of mine. I love the words – so comforting. And the harmony is beautiful. I find this a very relaxing song to play.
“Like a River Glorious” was written by Frances R. Havergal. Miss Havergal was only in her early 40’s when she died, but she left us a beautiful legacy of hymns that contain deep meaning, comfort and conviction. She wrote many hymns that we still sing such as – “Take My Life and Let It Be”, “Who Is On the Lord’s Side?”, and “I Gave My Life For Thee”
Although they never met she and Fanny Crosby were friends – one in England and one in America. One frail of health; the other blind. One died young; the other old. And yet, they both gave us hymns of deep meaning and faith. Hymns that have stood the test of time and are still sung over 150 years later.
This hymn has always spoken peace to my heart that God cares for me. He will not allow anything to happen to me without His presence there to help me. I have experienced this many times in my life which makes the hymn more precious.
Like a river glorious is God’s perfect peace,
Over all victorious, in its bright increase;
Perfect, yet it floweth fuller every day,
Perfect, yet it groweth deeper all the way.
Refrain:
Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blest
Finding, as He promised, perfect peace and rest.
Hidden in the hollow of His blessed hand,
Never foe can follow, never traitor stand;
Not a surge of worry, not a shade of care,
Not a blast of hurry touch the spirit there.
Every joy or trial falleth from above,
Traced upon our dial by the Sun of Love;
We may trust Him fully all for us to do;
They who trust Him wholly find Him wholly true.

What hymn do you turn to for comfort?
We LOVE that song here – Pierre does an amazing job on it and you’re right – the harmony is great….
Thanks for sharing the story of she and Crosby being friends 🙂 I learned something new tonight 🙂

I almost didn’t share about their friendship because I thought it was commonly known. 🙂

Thank you so much for the beautiful hymns. I listened to them while doing the breakfast dishes. After 30 years of home schooling, when there always seemed to be children either studying or practicing an instrument, I tend to forget that I can listen to music now! (I came over to your place to look at the fudge recipe).
